What is depression

Depression and Hypnotherapy

The Origin of Depression

I dare say that depression has a function for man and his system. Not feeling was once an option, but only a brutal appearance. Depression originally arose when people lived in caves to survive the winters. Body and mind were shut down from all pain, like a blanket so warm in the nakedness of cold and hardship. Functional? Oh yes, definitely. Depression increased the chances of survival, which is why we still exist today.

The Veil of Depression

The veil of depression is like the metaphor of the blanket that lies over her, assuming that the pain is no longer felt. Like a treasure waiting in secret to emerge, she sits safely and deeply alone.

The origin of the word depression

Depression is reassuringly still, time and again, like a blanket, dabbing at that which is not seen. The word depression is derived from 'pressione' (Italian) which means 'to press'. When we analyse the word further, but especially feel it as energy in our consciousness, the movement of the word is downward pressing. De-pression… decompression (English). An energy that is pressed down while it wants to go up, but cannot be lived nor seen. It cannot see itself, because neither light nor air has ever seen it. So it walks around, dabbing and feeling nothing except the wish not to be there anymore. Yes, that too is a feeling, but let's face it: it neither drives away pain nor fear. It does keep it still and stiff, as people did in the caves to survive the winter at the time.

The focus on depression

One keeps working on the depression itself, which is its own survival. Thus one will never be able to look at the shadow that is underneath, so that it remains safely kept under the blanket of darkness and is not yet seen by itself or its caregiver. Like a bridge over clear water one will work on the bridge, but unfortunately rarely on the water.

The layers beneath the depression

The first layer: anger

When one goes beyond the first layer of protection, depression, a series of anger opens up automatically, rising up and wanting to be seen, whether or not in hours of listening. Her anger will not last, because here comes her third layer…

The second layer: the inner child

When one breaks through and goes through the layer of depression, the inner child will naturally be seen that has been sitting there for a long time, crying on a stone, afraid and alone. But once man puts down his pressure and shines on this child, she sees there too a playing child who dances around in the wind in all her glory. She moves freely without fear, playing like the child who learns: “I am loved.” Playing and dancing, drying her tears, she rises and stares at her keeper who shows her: “Come, my child…”
